ENHANCE

Scaling-up Care for Perinatal Depression through Technological Enhancements to the ‘Thinking Healthy Programme’.

We aim to reduce the treatment gap for perinatal depression in Pakistan, the South Asian region and other low resource settings globally. One of the barriers to scaling up of evidence-based interventions is the scarcity of specialists to deliver such interventions or train and supervise Community worker (word peers/lay workers) for its delivery instead. Another impasse is the paucity of implementation research capacity in low resource settings to help un-pack and systematically study the challenges of scaling-up evidence-based mental health interventions across diverse settings.

ENHANCE is a four year long research programme, funded by the National Institute for Health Research, UK (NIHR) to the University of Liverpool, UK. Building on our existing global mental health research work and implementation experience within the south Asian region, through ENHANCE we will address the above mentioned barriers by undertaking the following;

Develop a digital application (App), using a human centred design, that can assist peers (i.e. lay-women with no prior experience of health-care training) in delivering an evidence-based psychosocial intervention for perinatal depression called the Thinking Healthy Programme.

Generate evidence by conducting a randomized trial for effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of the App-assisted Thinking Healthy Programme (THP-App) delivered through lay peers in Pakistan.

Collaborate with south Asian partners to create implementation research capacity among early/mid-level researchers in Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka

ENHANCE Beneficiaries are:

  • All the women with perinatal depression
  • Health systems that are responsible for provision of care along with the communities providing the Community worker (word peers/lay workers) to bridge the treatment gap
  • Organizations that conduct research and evaluation of mental health services.

ENHANCE Constituencies (all organizations or networks that will help our work create impact) include:

  • At the national level, the Ministry of National Health Services, Regulations & Coordination, Pakistan
  • At the regional level, all the partners from Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka
  • At the global level, the World Health Organization & Mental Health Innovation Network
